Solitary Confinement

I definitely would disagree with courts not viewing long term solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment. The idea that someone is locked up in a very small area with no contact, no communication for 23 hours a day seems to me as terrible form of punishment. I can see why some inmates may have to move into solitary confinement for their lack of compliance to the rules of the prison systems, but the terrible conditions they are put in, no one deserves to face long term. I feel like putting juveniles or those who are mentally ill in these situations can damage them for the rest of their lives, there might be other programs or punishments that can be used to shape them into better people. I feel like long term solitary confinement can only be a reasonable use of punishment for those who are a very dangerous threat to the general population, for example those who hurt other inmates and guards. If I was the warden I would definitely have a time limit for certain inmates depending on their medical and background history. If they were doing better and were more stable after a certain amount of months I would place them back into the general populations with certain restrictions until they were able to prove that they were ready to be let alone. Just like how the warden in the documentary would allow certain inmates to leave and prove if they were able to leave solitary confinement and return back to general population. After watching the documentary you can really get a sense of how that little room can really make someone go crazy and harm themselves just to get a few minutes outside of it. I feel like that documentary itself could be a example for courts to get rid of solitary confinement and come up with safer programs for those dangerous inmates.
